History

Our Club formed in 1977 as a small group of boaters eager to improve the conditions under which they practiced their sport. One of our members chaired the committee of the village that planned Gibsons' major dredging and building of the breakwater. Our clubs group role was to convince the citizens of the village that the project was worthwhile. Twenty-eight years later our representatives again, help plan a new harbour initiative. Continuous support of B.C. Council of Yachting Clubs indicates GYC's dedication to the enhancement of our sport province-wide. Gibsons Yacht Club members have organized years of sail racing and regattas. Members run the annual Christmas Carol Ship Parade and have hosted Canadian Power Squadron classes. A major thrust of the Club is the training of youth. Each summer, young trainees find boats, floats, equipment and accommodation ready, so that the instructors, hired by the club, can begin an enjoyable two months of learning the joys of sailing. Boating and non-boating members enjoy our social events. Dinners are held at a variety of venues. Walkers meet to exercise and socialize. Tuesday mornings find the men gathering for coffee at one restaurant while the ladies meet at another. The book Club meets monthly and excursions to interesting places occur when the spirit moves us. Throughout the year skippers are gathered to cruise B.C.'s inside passage as a group. Sounds, straits, bays and fjords are explored as a group gathers each evening at a pre-arranged rendezvous. Old salts encourage and advise while neophytes enthuse making continuing friendships form.
