History
The Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club was founded in 1946 when the two clubs which existed before the war combined. The club has always been based on the present site (in Nicholas Everitt Park). The clubhouse was built in 1966 and replaced the earlier small, thatched roofed building. The present building includes changing rooms, canteen, bar with lounge that overlooks the broad, and the race control room. A recent programme of refurbishment has resulted in many improvements, which include heating for use in the winter season and floating pontoons, replacing the older wooden jetties. The clubhouse is shared with the Lowestoft & Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club who use it for running their powerboat racing on Thursday evenings during the summer months. The University of East Anglia have a group membership and Sailability (disabled) have use of the Club one day per week. For those who wish to learn the basic and intermediate skills of sailing the Suffolk Watersports Centre is near by and holds courses throughout the summer months for all age groups.
