History
UKOBA was formed in 1963 following the success of the first Putney-Calais-Putney Rally 12 months earlier. This had been a race between London and France for outboard powered craft and given the name ‘Rally’ because the Port of London Authority (PLA) would allow boats to rally but not race on the lower Thames. The association was entirely ‘trade’ orientated and formed to encourage a greater awareness of outboard boating on the sea, hence UKOBA – the United Kingdom Outboard Boating Association. Only trade members were allowed to join, ie, those in the marine business ranging from small boatbuilders to large manufacturers together with distributors of marine engines and equipment. UKOBA can therefore rightly claim to be directly responsible for the introduction of the small mini-offshore racer which later became known as Class III (three litres).
