History
Organized in 1967 as a non-profit organization, our purpose is to bring together competent skippers and competent crew for their mutual sailing benefit. Pelagic consists of about two-thirds crew and one-third boat owners, and spans adults of all ages. The Club’s mission is to promote safety on the water, seamanship sailing, and good fellowship. Each person offered membership in the club has to complete several evaluation sails to ensure safety afloat. We are on the water every weekend, weather permitting. In the afternoon we may be rafted together or moored in the same area for a swim, a social time, and dinner. We don’t own a club house but meet in a local Boston area yacht club monthly to coordinate sailing activities. Cruising is just about every weekend from Memorial Day to Columbus Day with both a Northern and Southern fleet. Popular destinations are Cuttyhunk, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Isle of Shoals, Marblehead and other ports through out New England sailing waters. Often sailing continues throughout the year with members vacationing in the Bahamas, Virgin Islands and other romantic locations. Our activities continue on shore as well with a clambake, a winter thing party with the opportunity to ski, and a Holiday social in December. Yes, there are many social activities but the major activity of the club is sailing. General meetings are held in a Boston area yacht club from March through November. Meetings begin with a brief social, followed by a short business meeting and a presentation by a noted speaker discussing an interesting, and topical aspect of sailing. In the Pelagic Speaker Series, we have had speakers such as Dodge Morgan, who single handedly sailed ’round the world and Roger Duncan author of a A Cruising Guide to the New England Coast. In addition club members have previewed and reviewed their cruising plans and experiences to sail such places as the Bahamas and Down East. The US Coast Guard and others have presented programs including emergency volunteer radio relay systems, rigging, sail construction and trimming and bottom paint technology, to name a few. The Pelagic Sailing Club is a great way to meet other sailors, to improve your sailing skills and, most especially, to sail.
